Bamboo the new black?

Bamboo as a home decor is popping up across the country as flooring, cutting boards, or other home accessories.

Flooring:

Durable and refinishable for regular maintance after years of living, very contemporary look for any home. Prices vary from: $2 - $4.50.

Bamboo Cutting Boards:

I had instantly fallen in love about 10 years ago when I first seen bamboo home accessories come on the scene. My first bamboo purchase (aside from some earlier hair barretts) was a bamboo cutting board that 10 years later is still in just as good condition.

Eco pumps march across the stage!

The news is loud and clear, runways are starting to go eco-friendly on footwear! I read this week in Elle (the UK edition) that YSL, Sergio Rossi and Banana Republic are going green.

According to Elle they are planning on launching at least 50 designs that are "eco friendly" priced between $34.99 to $220.65 - which is not bad for designer shoes, and eco friendly to boot!

Martha is going green!

Martha Stewart is cozying up to new soft towels and bed sheets made of bamboo - best part about it anti-bacterial! Bamboo is a very soft fiber that not only makes up socks and clothing anymore but has become domesticated and worked it's way into the bathroom and bedroom. Benefits of bamboo is that it is a natural plant based fiber and doesn't not require acids to dye it which make it wholely a eco-friendly product.

Bamboo Towels - $6-$25 at Lands' End

A variety of colors and sizes!

Bamboo Bedding - $170

Bedding not only has a natural sheen even in it's natural state, but is also anti-bacterial!

I was absolutely amazed by bamboo when I first to my hands on it in the yarn form while being made into dishclothes. I later made a scarf out of the yarn and it sold right off the needles as everyone loved it's soft tactile touch. Alternating with my favorite alpaca apparel, bamboo apparel is a next runner up.

H&M focuses on being eco friendly

Malls across America have been celebrating the open of H&M with loud music booming through the coordors, lines weaving through the hallways and shoppers arriving at all hours to get the first glimpse of the new fashions to arrive.

H&M Openings Across the US

While companies restragerize to how they can conserve and save energies, labor, and work with more sustainable materials, H&M's Ingrid Schullström has been working on this since 1997. H&M's focuses are on water conservation, CO2 conservation, water cleaning for textile production, and employee/labor issues.

A recent interview with Ingrid Schullström can be found here.

It is great to see a local retailer, even if the textile productions are in foreign countries (China primarily in H&M's case) to be taking a proactive role in working towards friendly employee relations and conservation for the environment.

Bamboo-zled!

Did you ever think those green shoots hanging out from a panda bears mouth could be found in your home as anything from flooring to cutting boards? Bamboo is also a great fiber for apparel - very soft and has properties that make it anti-bacterial!

Bamboo is a renewable resource, meaning that since it can grow 2 feet a day it is easily replenished once harvested. Bamboo has many benefits everything some culinary, medical, construction, apparel, and home furnishings.

Here's some pictures I found that were interesting from bamboo harvesting:
